Andrew Tompkins ist Historiker der transnationalen Beziehungen im Europa des 20. Jahrhunderts und wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Deutschen Historischen Institut Warschau, wo er zur Geschichte der deutsch-polnischen Grenze während des Kalten Krieges forscht.

Seine erste Monographie, Better Active than Radioactive! Anti-Nuclear Protest in 1970s France and West Germany, wurde 2016 von Oxford University Press veröffentlicht und untersucht die transnationalen Netzwerke sozialer Bewegungen am Beispiel der Anti-Atomkraft-Bewegung. Er war 2023-24 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Lehrstuhl für die Geschichte Westeuropas an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, wo er schon 2013-2016 als Humboldt Post-Doc Fellow forschte. Zwischenzeitlich war er Lecturer in Modern European History an der University of Sheffield (2016-2020) und DAAD-Fellow an der Universität Erfurt und an der Uniwersytet Wrocławski (2020-2022).

Andrew Tompkins promovierte 2013 im Fach Geschiche an der University of Oxford nach MA-Studien der Geschichte an der University of Chicago (2007-2008) und der Politikwissenschaften an der University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill sowie der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und dem Institut d’études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po).
