Beata Halicka: Migration and female agency. Polish women in the post-war United States

Date and place

Tue 09.12.2025 | 13:00

Warsaw

In the wake of wartime and post-war migration, often after years of wandering, around 180,000 Polish citizens, including many women, ended up in the United States. Reconstructing the biographies of some of them, I raise the question of female agency in the difficult conditions of life in exile.

Particularly interesting in this regard are the biographical documents of writers, journalists, and women working in academia. Their legacy allows us to better understand the dilemmas they faced, as well as the challenges associated with the typical migrant's conflict between the desire to put down roots in American soil and the effort to maintain ties with their country of origin.
