Radical Ukrainian Nationalism: Past and Present

The two purposes of this talk are 1) to attempt an explanation of the persistent memory of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) in Western Ukraine and 2) to examine whether or how the collective memory of OUN-UPA fed into the appearance of far-right parties and organizations after Ukraine became independent. This will not be an examination of memory politics, but an explanation of how a portion of the Ukrainian population embraced the heritage of far-right nationalists who collaborated with the Nazi occupation and killed large numbers of non-Ukrainian minorities, particularly Poles and Jews.

The premise of the talk is that the memory politics of Ukrainian presidents who glorified OUN-UPA were a response to pressures from below. I also try to explain why the local cult of OUN-UPA in Western Ukraine rose to all-national prominence. Two factors enter in here: the nature of Ukrainian electoral politics and the desire to differentiate Ukraine from Russia.
