Europe. Our story: best handbook on the textbook market

The long odyssey of the German-Polish textbook ‘Europa. Our History/Europa. Nasza historia’ seems to have come to a happy end. Sixteen years have now passed since the initiative of the two then Foreign Ministers Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Radosław Sikorski, who gave the go-ahead for the realisation of the book project in 2008. Although the fourth part of the joint textbook, to which numerous former DHI Warsaw employees contributed (including Aleksandra Kmak-Pamirska), has been available since 2020, Minister of Education Barbara Nowacka has only now given the go-ahead for the handbook to be used in Polish schools. The work on the textbook was supported by renowned academics from Germany and Poland, who have been involved in the German-Polish Textbook Commission, which has been active since 1972. Until 2020, Robert Traba and Michael G. Müller, who were both associated with the DHI Warsaw in various ways, were responsible for the project. Hans-Jürgen Bömelburg (former head of the library at the DHI) and Violetta Julkowska then took over the reins. It should also be mentioned that the Polish Academy of Learning (Polska Akademia Umiejętności) awarded the authors and editors the prize for the ‘Best Handbook on the Textbook Market’ in June 2024.
