Branch offices

Branch Office Prague

A branch office, which supports scientific research on Czech, German and Polish history in the European context, was opened in Prague in spring 2018. It operates in close cooperation with a branch of the Collegium Carolinum Munich, the GWZO Leipzig, and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

- for events see below -

The office promotes academic research on Czech, German and Polish history in a European context. The branch office is a place of communication, cooperation and exchange between German, Czech and Polish historians, but also includes the neighboring East Central European historical sciences in its mediation work. In particular, it organizes academic conferences and lectures and supports publications.

The Prague branch cooperates closely with a branch of the Collegium Carolinum Munich, the Czech Academy of Sciences and the GWZO, which organize a common lecture series in Prague.

Since September 2023, the office has been headed by Dr. Jaromír Mrňka.

  • Economic and social history of the modern era
  • Theory and methodology of historical science

  • History of the Bohemian lands with a focus on the second half of the 20th century

Residence Program

The Prague branch of the German Historical Institute Warsaw offers research stays at its Prague apartment. Eligible are advanced junior scholars, working on their first or second books, whose projects align with the Institute’s research objectives. With this program, we support research in German and East Central European history that requires a stay in Prague/Czech Republic. The residence program is intended primarily for non-tenured, early-career scholars and is awarded for periods ranging from one to three months, depending on the research project.

All of the “Prague Histories Forum” lectures will be accessible online via Zoom. Please register here:
