About: 

Morgan Golf-French is Junior Fellow at the Turin Humanities Program. He earned his Ph.D. from University College London and subsequently served as a lecturer in history at the University of Oxford for two years. Between his positions at Oxford and Turin, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Leibniz Institute for European History in Mainz and at the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel. Next winter semester, he will start another postdoctoral fellowship funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation.

Golf-French’s research project, “Studying ‘race’ in the German Enlightenment,” aims to understand how 18th-century theories of race were taught and studied, as well as disseminated and applied outside of academic contexts. Drawing on archival sources from eight countries, the study seeks to critically examine assumptions about the spread of racist ideas during the Enlightenment while also gaining a better understanding of the relationships between German universities and the slave trade, colonial projects, and other systems in which racist ideas were considered relevant.

His research has been published in leading scholarly journals such as the Historical Journal, Modern Intellectual History, and History of European Ideas. His first book, Race, Culture, and Politics in German Historical Thought, 1785–1815, was published by Oxford University Press in May 2026.
