Traktaty pokojowe z Wersalu, Saint-Germain i Trianon z ich postanowieniami w sprawie nowych granic odnosiły się przede wszystkim do sytuacji w Europie Środkowej. Jednocześnie jednak właśnie w tym regionie najdobitniej ujawniły się ograniczenia dotyczące pryncypiów tych traktatów i możliwości ich stosowania. Manifestowało się to przede wszystkim w odniesieniu do gwarancji dla granic, rozwiązywania sporów terytorialnych, regulowania praw mniejszości oraz do ideału samostanowienia narodowego. Książka pod redakcją Dariusza Makiłły i Miloša Řezníka zawiera analizę tego, jak pojawiały się te sprzeczności i w jaki sposób traktowano je zarówno z perspektywy wewnętrznej, środkowoeuropejskiej, jak i zewnętrznej. Skupiono się na strategiach i wizjach przyszłego porozumienia podczas rokowań pokojowych, a przede wszystkim po nich. Autorki i autorzy z Albanii, Austrii, Czech, Niemiec, Włoch, Polski, Słowacji, Rosji i USA analizują strategie i dyskursy aktorów społeczeństw w poszczególnych krajach. Stosują jednak zarazem również metodę porównawczą i transnarodową. Zajmują się zarówno „wielkimi” protagonistami historii (dyplomatami, politykami, elitami intelektualnymi...), jak i strukturalnymi warunkami funkcjonowania „systemu wersalskiego”.

The peace treaties of Versailles, Saint-Germain and Trianon, with their provisions on new borders, mainly affected the situation in Central Europe. At the same time, however, it was in this region that the limits of their principles and applicability became most evident. This was particularly evident in the areas of border guarantees, the settlements of territorial disputes, the regulations of minority rights and the ideal of national self-determination.
This volume, edited by Dariusz Makiłła and Miloš Řezník, analyzes how these contradictions appeared and how they were treated in both an internal, Central European, and an external perspective. The focus is on the strategies and visions of the future arrangement during and especially after the peace negotiations. Contributors from Albania, Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Russia and the United States analyze, on the one hand, the strategies and discourses of the actors of individual national societies, but on the other hand apply a comparative and transnational approach. They deal with both the "great" actors of history (diplomats, politicians, intellectual elites...) and the structural conditions of the functioning of the "Versailles system".
