Das DHI Warschau und das Collegium Carolinum München laden zum öffentlichen Vortrag nach Prag ein:
Dr. Felix Ackermann (Warschau): Laboratories of Modernity: Russian, Prussian, and Habsburg Prisons in partitioned Poland and Lithuania

Laboratories of Modernity reexamines the history of incarceration in European Empires. It offers a new perspective on how, throughout the 19th century, Russia, Prussia, and the Habsburg Empire incorporated the lands of the Polish crown and the Lithuanian Grand Duchy. By  comparing the modernization of prison regimes in three different imperial contexts, the paper gives a unique insight into imperial rule as a long-term process in the new peripheries. It aims to show a hybrid of practices used to establishing new penal regimes through state coercion, practices that also addressed the necessity to confront and respond to regional, linguistic, and religious differences within the partitioned lands. It will particularly focus on the Habsburg lands of partioned Poland and zoom into the inner frictions of Brygidki prison in Lemberg.

Der Vortrag findet in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Historischen Institut der Tschechischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Karls-Universität Prag statt.
