We cordially invite you to a lecture entitled „The EU: Path Forward, or Aporia?“ by historian Mark Gilbert, professor of history and international relations at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Bologna.
The event will take place on November 6, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University (Palachovo nám. 1, Prague 1, room P104).
Mark Gilbert will revisit the topic of European integration and critically reflect on his own texts and the evolution of the European Union in the 1990s and early 2000s. He will explain the historical reasons for the crisis of the European idea and the internal contradictions that accompanied deepening integration. Gilbert is the author of European Integration: A Political History (2020), Cold War Europe: The Politics of a Contested Continent (2014), and, most recently, Italy Reborn: From Fascism to Democracy (2024).
The lecture is organised by the Institute for Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Political Science at Charles University, and the German Historical Institute in Warsaw.
