Latin America is one of the most urbanized regions in the world. The development of the city network was related to the colonial period, and the population growth in the 20th century was related to migration processes and industrialization by import substitution strategy. The second half of the 20th century, from 1950 to 2000, was a period in which the dynamics of urban population growth in this part of the world was the highest among all regions of the global South. Mainly large cities grew - thousands of immigrants from the countryside came to the capitals and seaports. e.g. in the years 1970-1972, approximately 24,000 people arrived in Mexico City every day. This led city authorities to implement spatial development and urban infrastructure improvement programs. The expert opinions prepared at that time on the situation in cities - their social and functional structure, contributed to the creation of spatial models of urban structure. They were intended to explain the origins and consequences of spatial processes and were an inspiration for similar analyzes in other parts of the world.

However, the 21st century has shown that the previously described theoretical models are no longer able to show all urban phenomena and processes present in the space of large Latin American cities. In addition to segregation, fragmentation, vulnerability, environmental threats, there are issues of epidemics, intelligent solutions, a healthy city, a creative city - widely discussed not only in Western cities, but also in Latin American cities.
