With three of the world's oldest film studios in the world (at Yalta, Odessa and Kyiv), Ukrainian cinema has a long and versatile tradition. Only, thirty years since the country's separation from the USSR, the only film made in Soviet Ukraine that is universally known as Ukrainian is Sergo Paradjanov's SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS (1965). Many of the masterpieces of Soviet Ukraine's film tradition, therefore, remain obscured and key directors of the Soviet period are little recognized internationally. In this talk I plan to take things beyond Paradjanov and give an overview of Ukrainian cinema's major milestones. It will be an attempt to propose an easy introduction to lesser-known aspects -- are related to the positioning of figures such as Dovzhenko, Mikolaychuk, Muratova, Illienko, Osyka, and others --  in a way that could be integrated in further cinema studies and teaching on film, so as to reveal Ukrainian cinema's distinct nature and bring it the appreciation it deserves.
